In
an epic duel with Fiji, Samoa emerged winners of the NZI International
Sevens Tournament in Wellington,New Zealand,
the third in the 2006/2007 IRB Sevens World Series.
16 National Teams were involved in the two day event, the final
being a showcase of Pacific Islanders Rugby at the very highest
level before a sellout crowd and a huge Television audience.

Facts
about the Tournament prior to the start:
Now
known as the NZI Sevens the tournament is in its eighth year and
will be held at the
Westpac Stadium on 2-3 February.
The NZ Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens is in his 14th year of taking
the team.
The
NZI Sevens is the third of eight IRB Sevens World Series tournaments
in the series.
The first was staged in United Arab Emirates (Dubai)
on 1-2 December; the second was in
South Africa (George) on 8-9 December.
The tournament after the NZI Sevens will be in San Diego (United
States) on 10-11 February.
The other tournaments are held in Hong Kong, Australia
(Adelaide Oval), England
(Twickenam)
and Scotland (Murrayfield).
The
winner of the Wellington leg wins the local tournament Cup trophy.
In 2006, Fiji won the tournament (and the overall series).
New Zealand had held the tournament title for the previous three
years
and the series title for all the previous six years.
This year the Westpac Stadium capacity has increased by 500 seats
to 35,000.
Matches start at 1pm on both the Friday and the
Saturday; finishing at approximately
10:15 on Friday and 9:30 on Saturday.
The 16 teams are split into four pools.
Each team is made up of 12 players; seven
on the field during at any time, with a reserve bench of
three.
Play on the first day of the tournament consists of pool
matches on a round-robin basis.
Points are awarded for wins, losses and draws and go towards each
team's final points tabulation.
Matches are seven minute halves with a two-minute break
in between.
There are four finals:
The Cup, the Plate,
the Bowl
and the Shield.
The Cup Final features
10-minute halves and a five-minute break.
Following
completion of all the pool matches on day one; the first and second
placed teams in each pool progress to the Cup Championship.
The third and fourth placed teams of each pool progress to the Bowl
Championship.
After
two rounds the points table is New Zealand 36;
South Africa 36; England
24; Fiji 24;
Samoa 12; France 10; Wales
8; Australia 6; Tunisia 6; Canada
4 and Argentina 2.
